Search in 2.3.4 - Broken or Feature?

 

It seems that the basic part of searching in Rev2.3.4 isn't quite as useful as it was in the previous versions.

 

 

For example, in previous versions, if I searched on 23 the system would tend to list all of the items whose ID had 23 in it:

 

 

SYS-23

 

 

SYS-123

 

 

TST-023

 

 

But now if I need to find the same list, what I need to do is search \*23\*. But wait, I can't do that - *'s and ?'s are not allowed at the start of the search!

 

 

Now as a software geek, I know my search indicators fairly well, and I can finagle my way through finding what I want (well, mostly - I still couldn't gen some lists given your constraints). But my poor manager was unable to find the item(s) he was looking for and doesn't have the 'tolerence' for wildcard indicators, as powerful as they can be. In general, he's not going to remember to run a search like: SYS-23 OR TST-23 to get what he used to get for "23" (and if there are other ID types, he'd have to type in each one - and remember the full list: SYS-23 OR TST-23 OR ABC-23 OR DEF-23 OR ....

 

 

For that matter, I'd prefer the old way over having to do wildcard searches they way they are set up now. It's bad enough I know what \[A-Z\]?\[a-z\]*.\[ch\] means.....

Not being able to use a star at the beginning of the search is a feature of our search engine Lucene.

The cost-benefit here was a more robust search but a less "non-geek" friendly search bar.  As we now search many more fields, a star at the beginning could break things with it's huge return.  For example, searching for * S* will return all the words with the letter s in them.

 

My suggestion would to simplify it down to S23 in stead of SYS-23.  Less to remember, even if there is a nasty wild card in there.

This is important feedback. It is our main goal to make the user experience easier rather than harder while at the same time providing advanced features for the power users. We had a lot of requests for the search to be more robust, to include wild cards, search additional fields as well as attachments like Word, PDF, and Excel. This is why we turned to the Lucene engine which is used by many other tools and follows standard search practices (see my note on Google below).

 

I do see your managers point regarding the ID. It is the one field that I could see being returned even if it isn't an exact match. So 23 for example would return REQ-233, REQ-23, REQ-623456, UC-123, BUG-23...as well as any area in the system where 23 exists alone. This is actually better than the classic approach in that the classic approach would return anything with 23 anywhere in the text. For some this could return a LOT of results which begins to defeat the purpose. If someone wanted to more specific match the wild cards would still be available. 

 

 

 

Note on Google

 

 

 

Google is obviously a very powerful search engine and is somewhat of a different situation than us but thier approach is very similar and maybe even less useful. For example, they don't allow wildcards (in fact if you put an * in the phrase it's pretty much ignored). However, for

common words Google makes some assumptions; "irefighter" will return

results for "Firefighter" as well as "irefighter" but "erwyn" will not

return any results for "Derwyn".  Google provides AND, OR and the

ability to put quotes around a phrase which is exactly how our search works today. So the only difference is that we don't make any assumptions. We assume the requested syntax is what the user wants so 23 is anything that is just 23. But it makes sense that we might make some assumptions, as Google does, to help the user along in areas that are more common.
