Is there a way to turn notifications on or off for a whole group of requirements? I have a relatively deep requirements tree that I and several other people have been creating, and I've had notifications turned off during this process because I didn't want to get a thousand emails a day. Now we're into review and updates, and I'd like to get notifications, but I would rather not have to traverse the tree and turn them on individually for every requirement. Is there some shortcut here?
Thanks,
Aaron
There are a couple of options. You can turn notifications on at the project or set level which will send you notifications for all items within that project or set. As well you can use filters to find a large group of items and then turn notifications on for those items. The advantage to the first option is that all items within the project or set, even new items added, will generate a notification. As well it is easy from within "My Profile" to turn those notifications off (or by clicking the notification button again on the project or set). The second option is good because you can turn on notifications for a specific group of items but in order to turn them off you'd have to either go to each one independently or from "My Profile".
Hope this helps.
Thank you, that's very useful. It's a bit odd that you can turn on notifications for a filter, but not in the grid view, isn't it? Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to turn notifications off from a filter?
Thanks,
Aaron
We would like to include the notification on all grids. It's actually more a technical hurdle than anything. As for the filter, the main reason it's difficult to turn off notifications for a filter is that (and this is an important distinction) when you turn notifications on for a filter Contour is actually turning notification on for each item in that filter at that point in time. So if a new item is added to Contour that then shows up in the same filter, it won't have notifications turned on. Same goes if an item that used to show up in a filter now doesn't, it still will recieve notifications.
Hope this makes sense. We are always interested in ideas to improve the notifications component.
Can I suggest that you represent filter notifications, at least conceptually, as a three-state value (on, off, or mixed)? One way to show this in the UI would be with an actual three-state control, either a checkbox with an indeterminate state or something like a drop list. Another possibility would be to just have two action buttons - turn all on, turn all off. In this case, it might be nice to display the current state, but it's not necessary to achieve the functionality that I'm looking for.
Another thing you might do would be to allow a recursive turn-on-notifications action on folders, the way that you do on sets. That would obviate a lot of the need for notifications in the grid view.
Thanks,
Aaron
